Can you make a film using a smartphone? Yes. Even 10 years ago this was possible. In 2015 Sean Baker made Tangerine using an iphone 5. In 2017 Steven Soderberg (hollywood filmamker) made a film 'Unsane' using an iphone 7.
There are many more that can be listed but most interestingly the latest film in 2024, by UK filmmaker Danny Boyle, 28 years later, was the highest budgeted film to be made using iphones - $75 million. So it's possible to make a film on a zero budget or even a high end budgeted film using smartphones.
The technology is improving each year and just getting better and better. When I started exploring the capability of smartphones back in 2014 I could see the potential in the technology and was pleased with the results from filming even with it's restrictions at that time. I could list many things that it wasn't very good at doing in 2014 but in 2024 that list has and is getting a lot smaller. There is lot to understand when it comes to getting the best results in the footage recorded on a smartphone and there are a huge number of youtube channels that dig deep into best methods, best practise and key knowledge that needs to be applied. The argument will continue in the indurstry concenring the use of smartphones to make films with and many will compare the results from smartphones to high end professional cameras like the Arri's, Reds and so on. Of course there is a difference and I'm not interested in comparing camera systems, my interest is, can you make a film using a smartphone and the answer is plain and simple - Yes.
